The Coppermine Team is proud to announce the release of Alpha Release of Coppermine Next Generation (cpgNG).

Note - This is an ALPHA release - read that as do not use it on production sites OR to upgrade your existing  Coppermine 1.x site (though we have done both ;) )

Some noticeable features of NG -

  • Mini Toolbar on thumbnails page
  • New DOM rewrite based multiple file upload system
  • Users can create albums in admin allowed categories (can be set from category mgr page)
  • Ajax keyword suggestion on file upload page
  • Nested Comments
  • RSS Feed
  • Display logic (html) completely separated from business logic (php)
  • Based on Type1 MVC pattern
  • Database abstraction class
  • SMARTY based theming

[edit]
You can checkout cpgNG from coppermine CVS repository on sourceforge. The module name is cpgNGDevel.

How to use CVS

Windows - http://cpg-contrib.org/index.php?file=minicms/cms&id=21 (by Donnoman)
Linux - http://sourceforge.net/cvs/?group_id=89658

Note: Remember to checkout module cpgNGDevel and NOT cpgNG

cpgNG is now in CVS. Edited the above post accordingly.

I have tried this NG on a existing install of Coppermine, followed instructions but it didnt do what I think it was supposed to do.
Which brings me to another question. In the admin-->config-->themes you can include a customised header & footer. I import them but they have some smarty commands in there. Is there a way lets say to include the Smarty stuff in the theme.php file so it can read those smarty values??

Otherwise I will try a fresh install of NG.

This is an announcement thread. Please don't clutter it with support requests.

Currently cpgNG goes unsupported. If you are testing and want to report bugs then post it here

Is there a demo anywhere so we can view this NG, and get all excited?

Can't say anything as of now...depends on the response we get...

Sounds good!

However I'm interested in the upgrade path for CPNG. Will existing 1.4.4 users be able to upgrade smoothly to CPNG when it is offically out and stable? The ability to have all our existing settings and photos still working even after the upgrade would be essential. If that is possible, I might decide to stay with coppermine for my current production system and upgrade to CPNG when it's ready. (got a timeframe?)

My purpose for upgrading to CPNG would be for the ability to have regular users create albums and upload to public categories. I imagine that after upgrading, the admin will be able to move selected existing albums to the categories they want them to be in? (after setting the appropriate permissions for the user of course)

If this is so, i'll deal with the uncategorised album bloat for my users until CPNG is out.

Any advice would be appreciated. :)

cpgNG is an unsupported alpha. There's no saying if there will be an upgrade process at all for it. Development is still in an early stage, there's no saying what will be in it once it gets released nor when.

Translation:  Don't ask any questions.  This is just some code a few guys put together.  If it ever become official software, they will let everyone know.  Untill then, forget you ever hear of CPGNG, ok?  They are just sharing the OPEN SOURCE with other open source people, openly.

Better translation:
You can ask as many questions as you want but don't expect them to be answered in every case or answered atall.

At this stage we are looking for users who can download the source, test it and look into the source code what is going on and hopefully report back to us.
If you do not fall in the above category - hang around and let those who can contribute to take the project to its completion.

Locking this thread as this is just for announcement.
