Attached are three translucent watermark images for custom thumbs (movie, audio, document) that work with GD2. They are based on Stramm's own versions but with their transparency is set at 40%.

That may seem a minor change if you know what you are doing, but I read and re-read the documents several times, and experimented unsuccessfully as many times before the light dawned.

As the docs say, the transparency setting in config doesn't work for GD; you have to make changes in your image app (Photoshop). The trick is to change the alpha channel, rather than alter the transparency of the image layers themselves.

If you use GD2, just copy these over to your images directory and enable Watermark custom thumbs (movie, audio, document) in Image watermarking in Config.
