In a number of my albums, there are no thumbnails showing up... it doesn't even show the nopic.jpg file or the red x 'image not found' icon.  There's just nothing there.  Here's a category page where some album thumbs are blank, but others show up: http://qafscans.inxplicable.org/gallery/index.php?cat=10

Here's an album page where nothing shows up:
http://qafscans.inxplicable.org/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=70

What could be causing this?  They all showed up before, and I haven't made any changes.

It's all working fine for me.  I see all the images as expected.
It has been a long time now since I did my little bit here, and have done no coding or any other such stuff since. I'm back to being a noob here

;D maybe your domain name is to blame  ;)

I was afraid someone would say that.  But what would cause them not to appear for me?  Please tell me this isn't a Service Pack 2 issue... ugh.

delete your browser cache, and review your caching settings (in IE: "temporary internet files"). I suggest you use a better browser anyway: Mozilla Firefox.

Joachim

Casper

I can confirm it is not an SP2 issue.

You should do as Gaugau said, and double check your browser cache and reload settings.

I just completely cleared out my cache - made no difference.  What should my caching settings be?

I do also have Mozilla Firefox, and I'm getting the same problem in it.

Works fine for me.

Do you have hotlink protection enabled? Does your computer use a Norton firewall app that blocks your referrer info? Are you able to see the image when you click on this link: http://qafscans.inxplicable.org/gallery/albums/aztek/thumb_swing2.jpg

Yes, I have an htaccess file in place, but it includes this subdomain among the 'allowed' sites.
I do use a Norton firewall app - no idea if it blocks my referrer info... how would I find that?
No - I can't see the image you linked to - it shows me my 'no hotlinking allowed' page instead...

Just turn off the firewall to check.  If it then works, there's your problem.

We have had errors caused by Norton firewall before.

Well, just turning off the firewall didn't work, but I tried turning off Norton Internet Security altogether, and that did work.  Huh.

Have there been problems with Zone Alarm?  If not, maybe I'll just go back to that...

And HUGE thanks for all your help.  I appreciate it.

IMO all Norton products suck (maybe except Norton Ghost, but after all they didn't code it themselves, but bought it from a third party ;)). Things won't improve with just another personal firewall software though, as it needs training and some in-depth know how to fix such issues as you just experienced. In my experience you should try to get a hardware firewall instead - most consumer routers come with one nowadays, they're great for what they have been built - intruders can't easily get into your machine, as it is "stealthed". Hardware firewalls are great to protect people behind it from port scan attacks, and that's basically what it's all about. Disabling the referer just sucks imo. Another bonus of "real" firewalls in hardware: they won't eat your machine's resources.

Remember that the "Norton Internet Security" software goes bundled with a virus scanner as well; shutting it down will leave you unprotected against virus attacks as well.

My top recommendations for client virus protection: "TrendMicro OfficeScan" (corporate users only), "BitDefender 8 Standard", "Kaspersky Anti-Virus Personal 5.0" (and no, I'm not affiliated with any of the said companies ;)).

Sorry, I keep forgetting the name of the Norton app. But the one you disabled was the culprit. What it does is that it blocks the referrer so that the server doesn't know that you are trying to view the images from that whitelisted subdomain, so it seems as if it's a hotlink attempt.

I agree with GauGau. Hardware firewall is much better. I've had times where software one would crash so I had to shut it down, which would leave the computer vulnerable when using a computer that wasn't behind the router.

Luckily my system runs Norton AntiVirus separately from Norton Internet Security, so I still have virus protection.  But - since you brought it up  ;)  [OT question] How do I know if I'm behind a router and can use a hardware firewall?  We're talking about my personal computer at home with a DSL connection.  Can my DSL provider help, possibly?  And if a hardware firewall isn't an option for me... can you answer my other question - have there been similar problems with Zone Alarm? [/OT question]   ::)

When I have had to run Zone Alarm, I did not have that problem viewing my site, which has hotlink protection enabled. I have only heard of this problem with Norton Security.

If you do not have a router set up, then you probably don't have it, unless someone else is taking care of the computer stuff for you. Routers tend to be used where there are multiple computers so that they can share one internet connection. You can purchase a router yourself. They're not that expensive.
