Beginner here, don't u boys kill me because I may be asking stupid questions.

I use phpBB forum already, and my only database is in use because of it. Now I would like to have Coppermine there too, with same user database. But the manual says I should install it to stand alone first.. No database to do that, am I in trouble? Should I just forget this?

Tranz

You can manually install into the same database; you just need to use a different prefix. The only time you would have an issue with not having an available database is if you are trying to use an autoinstaller like Fantastico.

Joachim Müller

in fact it's even mandatory to have coppermine and your BBS app share the same database. All modern apps that use databases feature a table prefix (coppermine does so, phpbb as well).

So I should basically follow the instructions and make the integration right away, and all should go well?

Is there perhaps any walk trough written in this subject already? :P

(I had no problems at all when installing my bbs, and I do work with Internet but I'm no professional in these database issues, so I ask before doing anything very very wrong.)

Tranz

Actually, you need to make sure they work independently before integrating them. There are instructions in the documentation in the docs folder or in the link at the top of the page.

Can I do that with only one database? Can I test the Coppermine in localhost instead of web?

Casper

Wether you run coppermine as standalone or bridged, the database remains the same.  So just install coppermine using your existing database, but when the install asks you for the table prefix, use the default setting, do not change it to the prefix of your phpbb.

Then test coppermine is working.  When it is, that's when you do the integration, with no need to touch the database again.
It has been a long time now since I did my little bit here, and have done no coding or any other such stuff since. I'm back to being a noob here

Tranz

Yes, to both. Check out http://phperl2.sourceforge.net/ if you do not yet apache/mysql/php on your computer.

and if you use separate databases in the beginning, it will be a pain to integrate the databases.

Casper

testing coppermine on your localhost will not garauntee that it will work on your web host.  I suggest you test it on the same server your bb is on.

OK, we'll se what happens. I'll come back and tell how it went. Thank you guys.

jenna

OK, I installed Coppermine, and no errors while using it. Then I made the integration things showed in manual. And it seems to be working, although I'm not sure. No errors anywhere though.

Casper

Glad it worked for you.

ps, and TranZ is not a guy, she's a doll  ;)

Slightly offtopic then, but sorry TranZ. I'm always calling both genders guys :P Even in my native tongue.

Tranz

That's OK... life in a male-dominated field. ;) And a few months ago, everyone on the team would have been guys.
