Filename Modified?

I just loaded Coppermine, and I am a real greenie to this.  Looking thru Admin Tools, I get down to " Filename > File title (1)" and it is for modifying file names.  There is a radio button in the blue area next to Filename > File title (1), and I checked it the other day for some reason, and could not get rid of it.  I then lost my internet connection for a few days, and just now went back and that radio button isn't checked, but there is no way to uncheck one of the radio buttons below.  I do not want files renamed when I upload them in any way.  That would really mess me up.  I attached a screen shot I just took of how that looks now so as to paint a clear picture of what I am trying to ask.

When I upload photos, are my file names going to be renamed?

Nothing will happen - this radio button's setting will only be taken into account when you hit the submit button at the bottom of the "Admin tools" page. Additionally, you have to select the option "Filename > File title" first (it has a radio button as well).
While you're not familiar with coppermine yet, just don't go to the admin tools yet. Try to figure out how it works - the actual options that are being taken into account are not on the admin tools page, but on the config page.

Thanks.  Can I assume that every time I go into the Admin Tools, that radio button will be unchecked, even tho I may have checked it before?

I was just reading the "Safe Mode Issues" in the manual, and have a question on something I'm not sure I understand.  I use an FTP program to upload files.  How do I change the mode of Coppermine's "include" directory on my server to 0777?

I've included a screen shot of what I see in my ftp program with the properties screen for the includes folder.  I'm wondering if that box that says 755 under numeric value is what I need to change?  There is no help in my ftp program associated with that.

The albums and userpics directories both say 777 in the properties box.  No zero in front.

I remember when I set up a contact form on my web page, I had to give someone access to change that for me.  Nothing I did worked.

2.5 Safe mode issues

A significant number of webhost on the Internet run PHP in safe mode. Coppermine runs without any problem in safe mode and with the "open basedir restriction" active, provided safe mode is properly configured. Unfortunately on many hosts, safe mode is not configured properly.

If your webhost is running PHP in safe mode but is misconfigured, you may need to do the following :

    * With a FTP program, change the mode of Coppermine's "include" directory on your server to 0777.
    * Do the same for the "albums" and "userpics" directories.
    * Check that at the beginning the the "include/config.inc.php" file, you have a line with : "define('SILLY_SAFE_MODE', 1);"

Wingspar, Lunarpages does not run in Safe Mode so it does not apply. PHP scripts will not run on LP servers if you use chmod 777. Please don't drown yourself in details that don't apply to you to reduce undue stress and anxiety.

Well, at my level of experience with this stuff, it's very difficult to know what applies and what does not.  I remember I had to change to chmod 777 to get my contact form to work, and nothing I did would let me make that change, so I had someone do it for me.  That was several months ago, and I don't even remember what chmod means, or what it does.

that's why there is a link to several tutorials in the docs that explain what CHMOD means and how to apply it. It's mandatory to know this when running a website, you should start reading one (or even some) of those tutorials.

I did contract admin for a number of years, and the key to contract admin was not memorizing the contract, but Knowing where to look up the info you need.  I have searched high and low for info such as chmod definitions, but come up empty, hence I post a lot of questions.  When you say "there is a link to several tutorials in the docs", where are the "docs" you refer to.  Only thing I could think of was the docs folder in the Coppermine folder, and there is nothing there, and some of the stuff, such as readme.html do not exist when I try to view the file thru cPanel.  I've gone thru the FAQ and manual, and didn't find a glossary of any sort.

I've looked at that documentation link many times, and there are still too many unanswered questions.  A Google on chmod did the trick on that.  To me, it seems like the Coppermine documentation is really lacking for noobies like me.  I don't think I've ever used software that is so overwhelmingly user unfriendly to me.  The manual only raises questions.  Maybe that's me.  I don't see others asking questions like this.

Coppermine is aimed at webmasters, who are suppossed to know how to run and maintain a web page, the docs simply can't cover the basics of webserver setup. If you need to find out more, STFW. A good place to start looking for answers is http://forum.coppermine-gallery.net/index.php?topic=22469.0 - read the article refered to in this thread, it'll explain our views pretty well. If you don't want to learn about webhosting and related stuff, I recommend using flickr instead of bothering to get coppermine running. If you find the docs confusing, you're welcome to improve them by posting newbie-proof instructions.

I've been doing web pages since 1997.  Nothing fancy, mostly plain html with CSS.  I've built galleries from scratch using Dreamweaver, but most of my working galleries are on Pbase, which is very similar to Coppermine, but with a more user friendly interface.  My reason for Coppermine is to try to make my gallery blend in with my website in a more professional manner.  Most of my gallery use is to upload photos to the newspaper which I work for in password protected galleries, of which are a piece of cake to do in Pbase.  On Pbase I currently have 202 galleries containing 5,007 photos.  Online purchasing is something customers ask about a lot.  So you see, I need something very powerful.  I'm nearly 60 years old, I've been around computers since the mid 80's, I've been on the internet since '96 or '97, and created my first web page in '98.  I'm a slow learner with some things, but I can and will learn it.

The reason I chose Coppermine over other software is that it is supported at the server my pages are hosted on, and installation was a few clicks of the mouse with the MySQL db being automatically created for me.

I find this http://forum.coppermine-gallery.net/index.php?topic=22469.0 very discouraging.  I had to look up flickr to see what it was, and I take that recommendation from you as an insult.

In the future, I'll post questions in this forum as an absolute last resort, and hope I get a useful answer.
