Can't delete Albums

Some files and albums can not be deleted.  When I try to delete an album with broken links I get the following error:

Directory 'albums/userpics/10005/' is not writable, files can't be deleted

you probably have deleted pics in that album(s) with your FTP client. Has been asked before and the solution(s) posted several times

you can either recreate the folders and put the pics back by ftp. Then delete them using the coppermine delete facility. Or you can go into your database using your db tool and delete all the entries for the files you removed.
