You upgraded from which version ? What were the steps you followed ?

I have just reloaded the original back up into a new folder. I uploaded the database as Latin 1. When I looked at the pages the £ displayed correctly. I then entered the site config and changed to UTF 8 and the £ was replaced with a ?.  When set the character encoding is set to Default (not recommended) (language file) all is fine.

The original gallery was in 1.33 and over time I have upgraded. The actual incident was only brought to my attention recently so not really sure when this error first occurred . Ran a version check and all the files are 1.48 and I also ran the database update.

Any ideas ?

When upgrading cpg1.3.x to cpg1.4.x, you have two choices:
  • continue using the old encoding you used on your old gallery (not recommended)
  • Set encoding to utf-8 and then convert all textual content inside your database to utf-8, using the charsetmgr.php that comes with the coppermine package
