I will migrate the existing Coppermine forums (currently based on phpBB2) to another BBS (SMF) in the next few days. During the migration process the board will be unavailable for some time (hopefully less than an hour) - I'm not sure yet if I will have to shut it down completely or if I just change to "read only" and disable user registration while the conversion runs.
Don't be surprised if the layout differs slightly when the new board comes up.

There'll be major benefits for the users, supporters and admins when using the new bbs software SMF:
  • it's lightning fast
  • it eats less resources on the sf.net servers
  • better and easier search algorythms (although the search might be a tad bit slower)
  • easier administration
  • added features (not sure yet which features that come with SMF to enable or disable - will have to keep an eye on performance in the first place)

wow your gonna switch to something that doesn't even have a forum outta beta yet? Ya dont' think that's risky? hehehe

Joachim Müller

consider smf as the next version of YaBB SE (which is pretty stable/mature). I've been testing SMF for a while now and I think we can dare to migrate...

you know I was looking at the site.. I though t it reminded me of YaBBa... Didn't know why... LOL

one thing I really dont like about phpbb is the lack of searching by subject... it is all or nothing in most cases...

Joachim Müller

that's one of the reasons why we're going to use SMF in the future...

Hey folks,

it's done - the forum has been migrated to SMF. There may be some issues that have to be solved in the future - please post here if you find an actual bug.

Thanks

Hello,

Feels quicker. However I have seened to have missed the option to search by subject.  I believe search by subject is crucial to any foruml and would really reduce the support e-mails you have. If someone can look for a sbject that is based on their topic rather than finding all occurences with that word(s) in it it would (should) cut down on repeat questions.

Thanks

KM

It's hard to tell what is a Sticky Subject and what is not anymore as well..

Hope that gets changed :)

Good Work Gaugau,

The board is very fast....

Rodinou

It would be great

1. You help all PHPBB users like me to create a convertor :)
2. Integrate SMF (I LOVE IT !!!!) with Coppermine ? :) (hheheheheheh) :)

version 1.3 comes with a bridge for smf,  ;)
It has been a long time now since I did my little bit here, and have done no coding or any other such stuff since. I'm back to being a noob here

Rodinou

Casper, what's a great new :)

Hoping it would be more simple than phpBB (I have cried days and days, without success :))

Joachim Müller

we're currently using the smf bridge with the demo (which is cpg1.3.0beta), so just check for yourself ;)...

I have had this happen to me several times now;

An Error Has Occurred!
Your session timed out while posting. Please go back and try again.

This is frustrating when I have spent a couple of minutes expertly typing with 2 fingers  :D, and lose it all and have to start again.

any chance of giving longer before the time out.
I never had this prob on phpbb, although this is a much better bb.

happened to me as well, but I can't think of a reason for it, since it uses the same php session the old board used to (although there are issues with sessions on sf.net webspace. I'm trying to improve this, time to see what Mr. Google can do for me... ;)
For now, I'm doing a [Ctrl]+[A] [Ctrl]+[C] before hitting "Submit" as a workaround (may become a nice ritual :-\).

just upgraded to smf 1.0 beta5p, which should improve session handling. Please report if you notice any differences (better or worse).
