We recently migrated our Forums from phpBB2 to Simplemachines (SMF).

The new forum has got a few advanced features (some of them being visible only for administration), the main advantage is speed: it's much faster.

What do you think about it?

Have you seen these -1 replies in some threads. Seems a bit strange to me, and messages are empty.

Overall seems OK, but I miss a listening of all the thread that I have participated in.

Joachim Müller

take a look at "Show new replies to your posts" at the very top of every page. The topics you posted in will have posted in have a yellow folder symbol in front of it, those you havent posted in have a blue one.
To show all threads you posted in, go to your profile and click "Show the last posts of this person".
PhpBB doesn't have all those features...

Yes it does, "View your posts" att index page on the top, right margin
And "Find all posts by magicjack" on the profile page.

I'm still a phpBB fan ... ;)

Have you played with CSS ? :)

I think there must be a overflow:hidden in body or html  ... because scrollbar is killed !!! :)

(to scroll however, click on left mouse et put down)

Joachim Müller

What do you mean? The scrollbars are shown OK for me, and I haven't played with css properties. We're using the smf default theme, with slight modifications on some icons (partially using the classic icons set).

what annoys me most about this new forum is that the modifcation code are hardly readable.... and the contrast is quite a strain to the eye..

this can be fixed easily, post your color proposals here...

The new board is nice, but can we still access the original board (Greg's old one)?  ???

i'm using Firefox and when i try and click a searched thread it freezes firefox completely.

STRiDOR

Hmm, so I'm not the only one.  This happened to me a few times too, but it was one particular thread in my case.  Firefox and Mozilla both froze.

Joachim Müller

please post a link to the thread that froze your browser. The old board can still be accessed here: http://coppermine.sourceforge.net/oldboard/

Thanks for the link.

Here's the link that freezes my Mozilla and Firefox.

There's probably more, but I haven't run into them.  cpu starts cooking at 100% and the app is unresponsive.

Not knowing much about code etc, but could this have something to do with xarumanx's signature.

See if this thread also does it; http://forum.coppermine-gallery.net/index.php?topic=4038.0#msg17588
It has been a long time now since I did my little bit here, and have done no coding or any other such stuff since. I'm back to being a noob here

Joachim Müller

can't confirm this, Mozilla 1.2.1 on Linux (Red Hat 9 with KDE) displays the page fine and does not freeze for me. Maybe it's something on your machine?

GauGau

hyperion

I can confirm this behavior on WinXP/Mozilla 1.6 (Gecko/20040113).

@casper: Your linked thread does not produce the same behavior.

Forgot I had firefox  :-[ so I tried it, and confirm the same freeze on the original thread.

Casper, the thread you posted is fine for me, no freezes happening at that thread.  It must be something else about the thread I posted.

Hi Gaugau,

I would like to have your insight (and any links you might have ready) for choosing the right forum software for one's purposes. (among those that are free, open source, and php/mysql-based)

I know phpbb is hugely popular mature software so I am curious to know under what considerations you have made the choice to move to an emerging beta-phase software.

Also, is there a forum software that validates XHTML 1.1?

So far, SFM does seem speedy, indeed.. are the pages more light-weight or does the processing go faster?

Thanks in advance,

Hute

i can confirm this. My FireFox 0.8 (on my win98 machine) also freezes when i click the link. First it's loading and i can see the first post, but then it freezes. In the statusbar i see "waiting for www.accro-photo.com" .....

btw The forum is indeed very fast. Although I have some 'difficulties' (maybe i just have to get used to this layout) with the layout. Maybe it's an idea to switch the (https://coppermine-gallery.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fforum.coppermine-gallery.net%2FThemes%2Fcoppermine%2Fimages%2Fnew_none.gif&hash=0a1d33d06299987e30c049bec29452d37ed9b775) and (https://coppermine-gallery.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fforum.coppermine-gallery.net%2FThemes%2Fcoppermine%2Fimages%2Fnew_some.gif&hash=b654e5bdeaf2e6ccb5a078e5a60e131cdb800837) bacause in my opnion the darker colour should be the 'new one'. The light blue one is more neutral and i think therefore better for the forums with no new posts in it. Just an idea :)
