MySQL optimisation

Hello folks. I've hunted around for info on this but the response is always: search the board for "MySQL said: Too many connections"

I do that and it brings up the threads where the answer is search the board for "MySQL said: Too many connections" 

My problem is that I have a Coppermine board with user uploads that was working alright until my traffic went through the roof. Now the site hammers the MySQL server until it falls over, taking 30+ other sites with it (all on the same VPS).

Can someone point me at information to help me rein in the site, please? Assuming there is some.

No well setup server should crash because of too many connections. Tell your host to look into it, they should be able to make the required adjustments. If not find a host or hosting package that can deal with your load.
