I tried both php include & ssi commands in the template.. the template doesn't pick up the php include or ssi... is there a way to do this? Thanks =)

You can't have php in the file template.html at all (and "no", renaming it won't help ;)) - see http://coppermine.sourceforge.net/faq.php?q=customHeader#customHeader and search the board, this has been asked quite often already.
